The purpose of National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in students at the secondary schools.
The four key principles of National Honor Society and how students at Southside High School are selected and remain members are as follows:
Scholarship Juniors and seniors who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better have met the reiquirement for scholarship. These students must maintain a 3.5 or btter cumulative grade point for their junior and senior years to remain in good standing.
Service Service is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school and community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. Members must complete 16 hours of school and non-profit community service each year.
Leadership Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependabel, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
Character The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.
